The Best Way to Study for the CPA Exam

The Best Way to Study for the CPA ExamThe Best Way to Study for the CPA ExamSo youve decided you want to become a CPA, but that exam is waiting out there on your horizon to trip you up potentially. You have three basic options when you plan to take the CPA exam. You can prep for it in a traditional classroom structure, in an online or recorded class, or you can self-study. Heres what you should know about your choices. Classroom Reviews Classroom reviews are extremely popular, but theyre also the most expensive. For example, the Northern Illinois University review course is very highly regarded, and it has an excellent track record of passing exam scores. But this comes at a price- it costs several thousand dollars to take the review courses for all four exam sections. If you have the funds available, classroom review courses are great as long as you do your research first to make sure the course has a good reputation. Many people find studying easier when they have an instructor to guide them through the subject matter. verbunden or Recorded Reviews Online or recorded reviews are similar to a classroom setting, but the pace of the course is controlled by the candidate rather than the course schedule. These reviewshave elements of both traditional classroom instruction and self-study. The courses have structure and format similar to that of a classroom, but motivation and the time you spend studying lie directly on your shoulders, like self-study. It is a good option for someone who desires a classroom setting but may not have the funds to attend a class or a candidate who cant commit to regular classroom hours due to work or other responsibilities. Self-Study Lastly, self-study is basically what it sounds like- the candidate does all his studying on his own. Theres nothing inferior about this method. The secret is to have the proper study materials, such as the Wiley series of CPA exam review books. Theyre very highly regarded, and they update eve ry year so you can be sure that the content matches what will be on the exam. If you decide to study on your own, you can always take a course later if youre not successful on your first try. Youll also want to get your family or housemates on board with your study plan so youll be able to devote the time and energy necessary to be fully prepared. The Bottom Line Different review courses are available depending on where you live. Aquick internet search will surely give you a lot of choices. You might also contact your states CPA society for recommendations, as well as college accounting program faculty to see who or what they suggest. Its a big commitment and expense, so do as much research as possible. Regardless of what method you choose, one otherresourceshould be added to your study plan theCPA Review, available online. Its free, and itoffers free practice questions with ?afull explanation of answers. Theres some paid content here as well, but the free content alone should be an integral part of your exam prep. And one final note- whichever option you choose, make sure you onlyuse up-to-date materials to study. Dont rely on your college textbooks. Exam content changes every year. Studying dated materials from your textbooks, even something as basic as intermediate accounting, can give you inaccurate information and cost you points.

6 ways to hire the right candidates in todays tight labor market

6 ways to hire the right candidates in todays tight labor market6 ways to hire the right candidates in todays tight labor market6 ways to hire the right candidates in todays tight labor marketIn a time of record unemployment and a time when there are more job openings than job seekers, its harder than ever to find the right fit for positions you need to fill.Candidates have so many options right now, says Stephanie Naznitsky, executive director of OfficeTeam, a division of Robert Half. Its important that a company sell themselves well and paint the picture of what the future will look like for them if the company chooses to bring them on board. Before you set out to make your next round of hires, look at our updated list of great hire best practicesReally hone your job descriptionMake sure the job description has been updated and reflects what the job requires. If you can, have the outgoing jobholder give the writeup a once-over to make sure its correct. If the job description isnt ac curate, youre setting the organization up for either a bad fit or quick turnover.I accepted a job as a lokal HR manager, and the job description said, 25% travel, says Matthew Burr, a human resources consultant in Elmira, NY. The job was 90% travel. After six months, I said, This isnt for me.In a tight market, candidates can pick and choose among opportunities. The more upfront and honest we can be in the description and in conversations, the better chance well have of landing the ideal candidate, Burr says. (You might even consider a video job description, which you can create at Studios.)Get your brand out thereIts crucial that your company has a coherent public presence, and that it appeals to potential employees.HR departments and absatzwirtschaft departments need to work together to make sure their brand identity is well conveyed and aligned and consistent, says Linda Pophal, owner and marketing communications consultant with Strategic Communications in Chippewa Falls, WI.What exactly is it we want to be, how is it supported through our products and services, and how are you going to communicate that when were in the process of filling a position?People who are applying to spots at your firm should understand what your brand means and how its reflected in the specific job available. If you need some guidance, consider The Foundry, which helps companies build better, more compelling career sites.Embrace videoVideo job ads are a great opportunity for candidates to get a better feel for a company and for the job in particular. They bring your firm to life, so to speak, giving you another way to attract potential applicants. In fact, eight out of 10 Americans feel that a video of a recruiter talking about a role as part of a job ad would help them better understand a job opportunity, according to Monsters 2019 State of the Candidate SurveyCandidates can get a good sense of where theyll be working and who theyll be working with, Pophal says. They can also use augmented and virtual reality to actually let job applicants put themselves in that position to get a sense of what it would be like.Consider how much time people spend on screens and engaging in interactive content. Its definitely an interesting model, and its probably going to be the wave of the future in order to attract and engage some of the younger generational talent, Burr says. Studios can help with a variety of video projects.Incorporate search toolsTechnology can make your search for the best hires easier. In a market where the ideal candidates may be employed elsewhere, or in which there are many applicants for one position, knowing how to search and using the right tools will not only save you time, but can get you better results. There are certain tools that are really helpful to screen through resumes in a portal, Naznitsky says. And there are a number of tools out there that Ive found larger companies tend to use because they have more response to particular jobs. For i nstance, Monsters Searchtool allows users to search for and engage qualified candidates in a variety of ways. The platform allows you to narrow or broaden your parameters as necessary and strenge ausbildung down for additional information when needed.Searchalso delivers qualified candidate matches ranked and scored based on your criteria. Candidates are scored based on their strengths and depth of skills.Tools like this would help recruiters screen out people who may not have any of the required skills, Naznitsky says.Be flexibleIf youre looking for the 100% perfect worker, you may never find him. Consider the potential of the candidates youre seeing, rather than trying to check all the boxes. We absolutely need to be open to people that might not be a total fit, but we can help build their skills, Burr says. Companies need to look outside of just the degree requirements and see what theyre bringing to the table. For instance, are they motivated? Do they have a desire to succeed? Are they engaged and willing to work hard? If they possess those skills, those qualities and traits, that should take a very high consideration, provided you have a good leadership team that can train them in the fundamentals, Naznitsky says.Develop your existing employeesConsider your current workers your brand ambassadors- everywhere they go, theyre advertising and informing people about what its like to work there. In finding the right people to work for you, its key that your current workers spread a good message about your company.Employees are a very trusted source of information about a company and whether its a good distribution policy to work, Pophal says. Its important that theyre saying positive things. That means crafting a great workplace culture and creating a company that fits what youre selling. You cant just pretend youre a great place to work, Pophal says. It has to bea good place to work, and employees have to like working there.has the tools and technology to help you attract and hire the right candidates, even in a tight labor market.See if Studios and SearchMonster might be a good fit for your hiring needs.

Top Ideas for Recruiting Great Job Candidates

Top Ideas for Recruiting Great Job Candidates Top Ideas for Recruiting Great Job Candidates The smartest employers, who hire the best people, recruit a pre-qualified candidate pool of potential employees before they need to fill a job. Or, as Harvey Mackay, well-known, irreverent, author and speaker, says about networking, Dig Your Well Before Youre Thirsty. Pre-Building Your Candidate Pool You can develop relationships with potential candidates long before you need them. These ideas will also help you in recruiting a large pool of candidates when you have a current position available. Read on to discover the best ways to develop your talent pool and recruit employees. The earlier you adopt these practices, the better your organization will do in the upcoming war for talent. (And, trust this statement, you will experience wars for talent as the baby boomer generation retires.) Read on to discover the best ways to develop your talent pool. Recruiting Your Ideal Candidate A job description that tells potential employees the exact requirements of the position is useful. Even more useful is the process you use to develop the job description internally and the behavioral characteristics of your ideal candidate. Assemble a team of people who represent the best qualities of the people who currently hold the same or a similar position, and dont forget to include the hiring manager. Develop a job description that delineates the key responsibilities and outputs of the position. Then, define the behavioral characteristics of the person you feel is your ideal candidate. Finally, list your 5 to 10 key responsibilities and characteristics you will use to screen resumes, perform phone screens and eventually, establish the questions for the candidates you interview. Sound like a lot of effort? It is. But, youll have a much better idea about the characteristics of the ideal candidate you want to attract to your company when you do this planning via email or a recruiting planning meeting. Tap Your Employee Networks Spread word-of-mouth information about the position availability, or eventual availability, to each employee so they can constantly look for superior candidates in their networks of friends and associates. With online social and professional networking, the chances are, you and your employees are instantly connected to hundreds, and even thousands, of potential candidates. Tap into this potential audience on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter, to name just a few. Use trade show booth time to meet and get to know potential candidates as well as customers. Encourage employees to gather business cards from, and develop relationships with, high potential possible employees. And, dont stop with employees alone; tap the networks of your social, board, funder, and academic connections, too. In a client company, the sales manager referred a childhood friend, who was moving back to his home state, for a position. Out of touch for several years, the now new employee had contacted all of his friends when he needed to relocate from Chicago to the Detroit area. The client benefitted from the sales managers network and hired an outstanding employee. Make sure you publicize your interest in employee referrals. In some companies, employee referrals, especially for hard-to-fill positions, are even rewarded with cash bonuses. Posting all open positions, announcing openings at the company meetings and sharing growth plans with company members will help spread your message. Take Advantage of Your Contacts Pay for employees to participate in and network in industry groups, conferences, and trade shows. Periodically, create master lists of industry leaders and other potential employees from customers, colleagues, coworkers, and friends. Develop a plan for contacting these people systematically and regularly. Be prepared to share your job description with them through the mail, email, on the internet, and by fax. Follow up on every good lead. Use extensive telephone networking. Bring people in for interviews before you have an available position. You may even want to consider starting a periodic company newsletter to keep your master lists of potential employees, customers and interested others up-to-date about company progress and happenings. You can use online and/or mail distribution to send these out. Looking for the right associations to join? Check out this resource: Find Associations, People, and Businesses from the American Society of Association Executives. Use Your Website for Recruiting Candidates Does your Join Our Team section of your company website tell and even, sell, potential employees about the vision, mission, values, and culture of your company? Do you present a message about how people are valued? Do you express your commitment to quality and to your customers? If not, you are missing out on one of the most important recruiting tools you have to appeal to prospective high-potential employees. Instead of the typical, dryly-written job listings about available positions, your website needs to include this vision, this information that sets your company apart from others in your industry. Your job listings must sparkle with a personality so that a potential candidate thinks, this organization is for me. And, now that you have their attention, you also need to provide a way for candidates to easily submit resumes for consideration for future positions. One company recruiting website has a Talk to the President link and, you better believe, people do. They receive a constant stream of resumes and contacts through this invitation and even hired a Director of Production who made his first contact here. Another companys HR team post generic position descriptions for positions that frequently need applicants. People respond. website recruiting works. Maintain Contact With Interested Candidates Dont let these potential employees submit their resumes and never hear from you again either. Youd lose all the momentum you just spent time developing with the favored few. Just as it was recommended earlier with employee networks and professional contacts, continue and nurture the relationship. Enable interested candidates to subscribe to the company newsletter; consider writing a mini-newsletter just for them. Follow-up all website submissions with a greeting that says thank you for your interest in our company. Send a periodic update about your job openings. Invite the potential employee to visit your organization when they are in the area. Your professional, ongoing contact with interested people ensures recruiting success. Become an Employer of Choice Think about what a potential employee considers before agreeing to join your organization or business. Are you stable, making money and growing? Are you employee-friendly? Does your mission catch the mindshare and/or the heartstrings of the people you most want to recruit? Will a new employee feel part of something bigger than themselves if they join you? Will your organization nurture their talent and provide exciting opportunities for challenge and professional growth? If you can answer these questions affirmatively, analyze every component of your recruiting process to make sure that you are sending these messages. If you want to be an employer of choice, you must act like an employer of choice. Furthermore, you must communicate this commitment to your prospective employees. People look for little things - that are really big things - such as noticing whether you return phone calls promptly. They observe when all interviewers repeat the same questions. They are aware that you responded to acknowledge receipt of their resume. They appreciate a phone call when someone else is picked for the job they wanted. (Yes, you still need to send a letter to the people you interviewed, but the more informal follow-up is appreciated.) They feel welcomed when they can communicate with you via email. In addition, being an employer of choice is a reputation you build in your industry that is a powerful tool in attracting top talent. Recruit Using the Internet The internet, in addition to your own organization website, has quickly developed to become the key tool in recruitment in terms of its usefulness to employers, potential employees, and society, in general. Learn how to use the internet to find and attract great candidates. These are options you can currently consider. Post your positions on professional association websites. This includes local chapter websites or professional associations related to the job. (This is an excellent method for finding local talent.) Post open positions on websites that private vendors or your state and/or local government provide. Your own state or country will have equivalent resources for you to use. Post your classified ad on newspaper-related websites. Most newspapers have an affiliated website where you can post ads. These ads are either included in the price of a classified print ad (does anyone use these anymore except for close local job postings?) or you can pay for online posting only. Make sure that your recruitment ads sell the vision and the advantages of your organization. Effective ads portray your company as an exciting and rewarding place to work. Effective job postings make people want to apply to your firm. Use Headhunters and Recruiters Sometimes, it is worth your time to use headhunters, recruiters, and employment placement firms. The best firms have done much of this homework and candidate pool development for you. Expect to pay 20-35 percent of the cost of the new recruits annual salary. But, for some positions, and in some industries, the cost in your departments time and the time invested in a possible failed search, are worth it. Additionally, recruiters have an already-developed pool of candidates. They provide a second pair of experienced eyes to help you with your search. Some of them are very good. An HR associate met with a recruiter recently and offered him a sales job in a client organization on the spot. Believe this, he was that good. She could definitely see him finding great candidates for employers. When you work in an HR role, calls from potential recruiters come several times a week. Ask for references and check them out. Talk with non-competing firms to get referrals of recruiters with whom theyve been pleased. You can also research recruiters at any number of websites online. Looking for additional ideas about recruiting employees who are potential star performers? Here are several more of my favorite ideas for recruiting employees. Use Temporary Agencies and Firms Consider using temporary staff as a solution to try a person out in a position or to staff a position you are not sure you need for the long haul. Temporary employees can also provide a useful buffer for the ups and downs of the business cycle so that you do not have to affect your core staff during downtimes. Temp firms will recruit and screen to your specifications and guarantee your satisfaction. They save your staff immense amounts of time as they provide testing, drug screening, reference checking, background checks, and anything else youd like, for a nominal fee. By the time HR staff meets with the selected group of candidates, most of the work, other than a personal job interview, has been completed for them. Additionally, as the firms become familiar with your needs, just as headhunters and recruiters do, they will seek out and suggest talent they believe meets your criteria for star candidates. Many companies work with two or three agencies and many companies hire only the top five percent of temporary staff members, so they hire great people. Learn About Your Ideal Candidates Identify what your needed candidates read; notice the websites they visit; study the listservs on which they participate; determine the industry magazines and newspapers they read. Identify their favorite news sources, forums, discussion groups, and places to practice social networking. In other words, find out everything you can about the types of people who make up the top ten percent of your current employees and the best of your talent pool. Use this information to screen resumes, of course, and to develop effective interview questions. Most importantly, use this information to develop creative, fun recruiting strategies for your potential openings. Sit with an interested group that includes members of the group you are trying to recruit and brainstorm other potential ways to locate a well-qualified pool of candidates for each position. Some examples that have been seen include a very funny ad in a staid newspaper. It literally jumped off the page because it stood out so strongly from the pack. (The ad was looking for a creative for an ad agency; You can bet that they found their perfect candidate.) People have been recruited as potential staff members while browsing in a bookstore because of the books they were reviewing. People recruit at trade shows from the people visiting their booths. Recruit Through Your Good Deeds Heres a bonus thought about recruiting great employees: The publicity your organization receives in the news media, in print, on television, on the radio and online is tremendously important for recruiting. A few good words, an interesting article or a piece about your mission that reflects your organization in a favorable light, will result in potential employees coming to you. And, that is the best way of all to find great potential employees for your candidate pool. Ideas for recruiting are endless and endlessly challenging, but the time and effort you invest are worth it when they result in top talent for your organization.

Why Cover Letters are the Worst#8230;.Until They Aren#8217;t

Why Cover Letters are the Worst#8230;.Until They Aren#8217;t Why Cover Letters are the Worst#8230;.Until They Arent It didnt come through: Lots of Applicant Tracking Systems and job board portals give you the option of adding your cover letter to your application, but thats not the whole story. Many times, depending on the (internet) proximity to the actual company, your application (cover letter and resume included) is torn apart, stripped down, parsed into sections that will work inside of the companys internal system and put back together in that organizations particular protocol before human eyes even see it. Since resumes are the lifeblood of the recruiting application, the information in these usually makes it through, but since cover letters are a block of text that can be ignored easily or error-ed out all- many dont make it through. They dont have time: The average time that a recruiter scans or reads a resume is between 6-30 seconds and it seems to be going down every year. These people are racing through your resume and probably would love to read your cover letter (if you are their cousin or best friend). Right now, though, its get through that stack of resumes or miss Burrito Day in the cafeteria. Which would YOU choose? They arent ready to emotionally invest in you: I know this one sounds like a stretch, but stick with me. The truth is recruiters are trying to find the very closest match to the job they have open. For all the talk about workforce planning and cultural fit, thats not what their brains are thinking about right now. So before they read your cover letter, they need to see what skills you have. Otherwise, why risk liking you because of your killer cover letter? So why even have cover letters at all? Are they just a useless invention, designed to make jobseekers work harder than they have to? Well, not really. You see cover letters do have a great place in the job hunt strategy of many folks and there are even recruiters out there who love getting and reading them (and sometimes making fun of them on Facebook). A few situations where a cover letter is a must have: Employee referrals. If someone inside the company has recommended you for a specific position, a cover letter (along with a STELLAR resume) is a great way to back them up. Coming on strong can be an advantage in this particular arena. In this instance, reference the person who referred you for the position and mention one or two things that youve discovered in researching the potential hiring company. (Recruiters, look for these things, obviously!) Startup situations. A traditional cover letter in a startup situation? Maren says yes! Heres why: In startups, cultural fit generally comes closer to the beginning of the process. Also because many new businesses are waiting until they are drowning in volume hiring or get seed capital or series A or whatever, they dont have a need for a fancy ATS that will boot your application with cover letter out the door. When its your dream job. If youve been dreaming about working for a company forever, dont let the same old rules dictate your job search. Hopefully, youve been researching this company for awhile and may have an idea how to get your cover letter in front of someone who will actually read it. In fact, I just sat down with my 11-year old to write the first of many letters to Lego, the place he WILL work when he grows up. Bottom line, you HAVE to have a cover letter, because the one time you dont include one, itll be the thing that costs you the job, but keep in mind that you need your resume, phone screen, internal referral and social profiles to be impeccable as well.Master the art of closing deals and making placements. 7 Steps Landing First Job

7 Steps Landing First Job 7 Steps Landing First Job Landing that first engineering job after graduation may be one of the most difficult things accomplished over the course of a career. Even though a fledgling engineer may have successfully completed internships, attended career fairs, and essentially done all of the right things college career counselors recommended to help find that job, it just might not be there after graduation. However, there is some good news. A 2012 Student Employment Gap study conducted by Millennial Branding and Experience, Inc. revealed 87% of employers are going to hire more recent graduates this year, and of those, 34% of companies are recruiting engineering and computer information systems majors. A 2012 Student Employment Gap study conducted by Millennial Branding and Experience, Inc. revealed 87% of employers are going to hire more recent graduates this year, and of those, 34% of companies are recruiting engineering and computer information systems majors. In hiring recent college grads, Jennifer Floren, founder and former CEO of Experience, Inc. noted: Of all the things employers look for when hiring entry-level talent, its the so-called soft skills that are valued most: communication, teamwork, flexibility, and positive attitude are by far the most sought-after skills. Employers understand that everything else can be taught, so they look for the most promising raw material to work with. So now the job search begins. The first thing to note is that finding the right job is more than simply searching for postings online and emailing a resume. The job search is a process and often times a frustrating one. The process involves research, outreach, follow-up, and dogged determination. Here are a few additional tips that might help recent graduates in searching for that first engineering job. Keep Your Resume Up to Date Your resume is a dynamic snapshot of your skills, experience, and professional objectives. It is important to keep it fresh. If youve learned a new software program, completed an educational course, or attended an applicable seminar during the time youve been searching for a job, be sure to add it to your resume. Depending upon the job you are applying for, you may need to adjust your resume so that your most relevant skills and experience are highlighted. It is imperative to tailor your resume for each job application. Network with Colleagues, Family, and Friends In job searching, who you know is truly important. Your business colleagues, family, and friends together know a lot of people. Make sure they all know you are looking for a job and ask for their help, especially referrals to others who may help. Do they have any business contacts that you could connect with to seek advice or gain a referral? Stay in touch with them every few weeks out of sight is usually out of mind. Tap into Your Alumni Association Alumni are a good source of potential job opportunities and typically will go out of their way to help their fellow alumni. Stay active online and join your local chapter. Face-to-face interaction at Chapter meetings is a good way to network. Many alumni form social networking groups on LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter. Join the groups and be visible. Introduce yourself to the group and state your job objectives and ask for help. Work Part Time/Volunteer What have you been doing since graduation? That question inevitably comes up during an interview. And while searching for a job is a job itself, its better to demonstrate that you are active doing other things in addition to seeking a job. Take a part-time job. Even if it isnt in a related field of interest, it shows that you are energetic. And since you most likely have college loans to start repaying, no one would question the need to generate at least some income. Volunteering for charitable causes is also a good way to demonstrate your drive and enthusiasm. It is also another great way to meet new people and expand your network. Identify Companies of Interest Dont rely on a job falling in your lap. While you may be lucky enough to find an interesting job posting at a company youd like to work for, its more than likely that youll have to proactively find a job opening at one of your companies of interest. There are many online resources to help you search, like monster.com and job-hunt.org. Use their tools to help you make a list of companies you would like to work for. Search social networking sites, like LinkedIn, for contacts within these organizations. Alert them to your interests and career objectives. Many will be willing to help or refer you to someone else who might help, and once again, youve expanded your network. Expand Your Opportunities Unfortunately, you might not be able to land your dream job the first time around. Expand your opportunities by searching companies and positions in adjacent industries. You might also consider contract or temporary opportunities. These will strengthen your experience and sometimes lead to full time positions at the end of the contract. Dont Get Discouraged Easier said than done, but prepare yourself that the job hunt will be a long and often tedious process. Set weekly objectives i.e. number of applications sent, phone calls, company searches, etc. and once youve accomplished your goals, take some time for yourself. Tom Ricci is the owner of Ricci Communications. Of all the things employers look for when hiring entry-level talent, it’s the so-called ‘soft skills’ that are valued most.Jennifer Floren, founder and former CEO, Experience, Inc.

Environmental Criminology

Environmental Criminology Environmental Criminology Environmental criminology  describes the relationship of the individual environments in which crimes occur and how they influence or contribute to criminal activity and behavior. The Four Elements of Crime Criminologists insist that there are four necessary elements for a crime to occur. If one of these elements are not present, then no crime has occurred. Law: First, there must be a law to be broken. If the activity is not illegal, then obviously it cant be criminal.Offender: Second, someone must have broken the law. If there is no offender, there is no crime.Victim or Target: Third, in order for an act to be criminal, there must be a victim. In so-called victimless crimes, the state or community as a whole is said to be the victim because of the problems that are believed to be a result of the behavior.Place: Fourth, the activity or behavior must have occurred in a place. There can be no crime in a vacuum. Focus on the Environment For environmental criminologists, the fourth element, the place, is the focus of their studies. The field began to develop in the early 1980s and looks at the environmental factors that they believe can lead to influence crime and criminal behavior. In studying the place, environmental criminologists are not so much focused on the geographic location, but on the elements within the location, such as lighting conditions, the state of repair or disrepair that buildings may be in, and other neighborhood conditions. Environmental criminology looks at data such as the time and place of crimes in order to help law enforcement officers better understand where crimes are occurring. This helps police officers focus their patrols in order to take a more preventative approach to crime solving, as opposed to a reactionary approach. In this way, environmental criminology is complementary to community-oriented policing. Crime Mapping One of the most recognizable examples of environmental criminology put into practice is the crime map. No doubt, youve seen television shows or movies, or maybe youve ever been to a local police station, where youve seen a large map posted to a wall with pins and other markings on it. Those pins or marks indicate areas where crimes have occurred and are a very basic example of what criminologists call crime mapping. Environmental criminologists take the mapping even further, pouring over the data to search for patterns. Identifying Patterns The ultimate goal is to use any patterns they locate to help identify the root causes of the crimes and help devise workable solutions to the problem. For example, if a large number of robberies are occurring in a specific place at a specific time, environmental criminologists will want to look at that location at that time to determine what the contributing factors may be. Broken Windows Theory There is a belief held by some criminologists that fit in line very well with the overall idea behind environmental criminology. The thinking is that people act according to what they perceive to be the social norms of their environment. When other people are not around to demonstrate normative behavior, people must instead look to their environment for clues. The Broken Windows Theory suggests that the physical and visible state of the buildings, lawns, homes, and businesses provide important cues as to how people behave in that area. The idea is that the more broken windows there are in the neighborhood, the higher the likelihood that there is a crime in the area. Career Potential Environmental criminology is a new and developing field, with plenty of room for growth. As technology advances in criminological studies, the ability to identify and isolate patterns in criminal activity will only increase, in turn increasing the need and desire for qualified individuals to gather and interpret the data. If you are a person who is interested in a career as a criminologist, especially if you enjoy finding patterns and solving problems, a career as an environmental criminologist may be just the job for you.

Resumes Why I have more than 1 version of my resume

Resumes Why I have more than 1 version of my resume Resumes Why I have more than 1 version of my resume No matter where we stand on any political or economic issue, there’s one thing we can all agree on: we hate resumes. They’re a chore, and they leave us feeling vulnerable. Our life is wrapped up on one piece of paper. They feel like an economic obituary: “Here we see John Smith, who improved production times 15% at Factory Company, exercised critical thinking in managing costs during peak sales months, and left for an opportunity as Associate Manager at Machine Company three years later.”Our resumes are both pompous and humblingThey’re a way to use key words to exaggerate the menial details of our job. Going to John in marketing about a flyer on the office board turns into “cross-departmental liaison.” Meanwhile, we can’t help but compare titles with our colleagues, and we wonder how some have been able to move up the corporate ladder seamlessly even when they were less qualified than we were.Resumes are a dirty business. Trust me- that’s what I’ve been doing  for a living for seven years now. In fact, I’m not really sure how I fell into it. What I have learned, however, is that while our resumes evolve with the times (should I include  a headshot? Not anymore!), and while all resumes may be graded by the quality of the consistency, word choice, and general structure, all resumes are not created equal. What I mean, here, is this: Not all resumes fulfill their intended purpose, regardless of the professionalism, word choice, and clear growth in career that is presented. Here’s  why you should have multiple  versions of the same exact  resume.Bigger companies run your resume through softwareIf your resume is, ahem, unique, much of your background will be lost as the software  tries to pull key data. Resumes with graphs, columns, and any type of images- from lines to sections to break-out boxes- can throw the software reader off, so you should always have a stripped version of your resume for bigger companies. We have to be honest with ourselves about  our career plansWhile we might have an idea of what our long-term goals are in our career, for all of us- myself included- we often find ourselves in places we never would have expected to be, and we should be  open to pivoting in a few different directions in our careers. While you may be say, an operations manager today, you  may also be open to a general manager position, consultant position, or maybe even a position in which you use your operations experience in a whole new way.We are multi-faceted, all of usWhile we may have a career plan, it usually doesn’t play out the  way we think. And we all have unique skills and experiences that we bring to our jobs that can be used in specialized ways.So don’t just have a resume for the next logical step in your career. Have resumes ready for the new opportunities that you can pivot into, should you want. This means having different resumes that  focus on different parts of your job  as well as different skills and qualities that one position may desire but another does not.In an age where retirement continues to be pushed back, and for many of us, a mid-life career change is inevitable, it is necessary for us all to consider how we will pivot and keep our careers progressing. We can do so by being prepared for the worst and open for the best opportunities life may give us.This article originally appeared on LinkedIn. Past President Played Role in Key Environmental Study

Past President Played Role in Key Environmental Study Past President Played Role in Key Environmental Study Past President Played Role in Key Environmental Study In the 1970s, as more and more municipal waste combustion plants came online in the U.S. and Europe, environmental scientists on both continents began looking at the production of airborne dioxin from the facilities and the potential threat to human health. The dioxin, these scientists concluded, are released from the flues of the waste combustors when waste products made of polyvinyl chloride plastic, or PVC, is incinerated. At the time, Charles O. Velzy was president of anenvironmental engineeringconsulting firm providing technical services to one of the businesses most impacted by the spate of dioxin reports solid waste processing. He was also serving in the leadership of the Societys Solid Waste Processing Division and Research Committee on Industrial and Municipal Waste. Velzy is one of several former ASME presidents who gave an oral history to the ASME History and Heritage Committee. View a video clip from ASMEs Oral History with Charles O. Velzy The dioxin issue first became of concern to ASME at the 1980 Biannual Conference of the division, recalled Velzy, who nine years later was elected the 108th president of the Society. Many members in the division believed the issue warranted in-depth technical discussion. Charles O. Velzy, ASME Past President While operators of the facilities were aware of the presence of dioxin emissions during combustion, many were not convinced that increases in the volume of PVC in the waste stream necessarily produced increases in emissions of the toxin. People in the industry were, of course, extremely concerned, as the initial reports lacked a research foundation and supporting technical data to carry out a comprehensive analysis and assessment, said Velzy. Velzy in 1980 chaired an ad hoc committee under the auspices of the Research Committee on Industrial and Municipal Waste, which was tasked to provide the scope and framework for a comprehensive, science-based study into the dioxin issue. Subsequently, the consulting firm Arthur D. Little was contracted to do a survey designed to gauge the level of knowledge in the engineering community regarding dioxin, resulting in a report titled State of the Art of Dioxin from Combustion Sources. The ASME Research Committee on Industrial and Municipal Waste believed that the Society could provide a service by bringing together all pertinent information scientists understood about dioxin what it is, how it forms, how it is destroyed, said Velzy. This foundational basis would then enable the scientific community to arrive at critical decisions, including how to control the dioxin emissions. In 1995, ASME publishedThe Relationship Between Chlorine in Waste Streams and Dioxin Emissions From Waste Combustor Stacks, an exhaustive technical evaluation compiling more than 1,900 tests of dioxin emissions from 169 waste-to-energy plants, cement kilns, biomass combustors, and medical waste incinerators from diverse locations around the world. In carrying out the tests, engineers fed chlorine in the waste stream, and then measured the combustion emissions to determine a possible causative link between the chlorine content and the formation of dioxin in the flue gases. Eighty percent of the facilities in the study showed no statistically significant relationship between chlorine input and dioxin; the authors stated: The hypothesis that fuel chlorine content and combustor flue gas dioxin emissions are related was not confirmed by the data analyzed in this study. While the study was issued five years after Velzys term as ASME president, the engineer from Illinois played a major role in laying the foundation for key studies, beginning in 1980 and continuing to his ASME presidency in 1989-1990. Velzy, in the oral history, looked back on a research endeavor that was time-consuming, challenging and, at the same time, very exciting. It also provided lessons. The public does not understand the critical role of sound scientific and engineering analysis to assess oftentimes misconceived notions of environmental damage brought by certain technology, said Velzy. The dioxin project demonstrated that there is a correct approach to dealing with environmental issues, one that is based on sound engineering. How to Find Local Job Listings

How to Find Local Job Listings How to Find Local Job Listings Are you looking for a job and not having much luck finding local job listings? There are variety of ways to narrow down your local job search to focus on jobs near you â€" or in the locations where you are interested in working. Use Local Job Search Resources First, use local search resources. Sounds simple, doesnt it? But, many job seekers get so focused on 21st century job-search methods that they forget the old-fashioned ones. Start close to home, and look for resources in your city or town. Our local Chamber of Commerce website, for example, has been an excellent resource for job seekers in my town. Employers that are members of the Chamber of Commerce can post job opportunities for free and those local job listings are often posted on the website before they are advertised elsewhere. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has a directory you can use to find your local Chamber. Craigslist is another excellent source for finding local job listings. Use the Job Search Engines Using a job search engine is a great way to find local job listings. Use the type of job you are interested in as a keyword, then enter your city, state, and ZIP code to find local jobs. Advanced search options will enable you to refine your local job search even further, and search by company, words in the job title, and the radius from a city or ZIP code. Check the Classifieds The next step in conducting a local job search is to check your local newspaper classified ads on a daily basis. Many newspapers are affiliated with CareerBuilder â€" but not all of them. Some small to mid-sized employers only advertise locally. Most local newspapers are available online. Google the name of your local paper, and you’ll find its online presence pretty quickly. From there, it’ll be simple to find job listings, usually in their own separate section of the site. Check Local Job Listings The big job search sites let you look for work in any part of the country (and often the world), but they also let you look locally, as well. Monster and the other job banks contain local job listings and users can search by ZIP code or city/region. Also check your local Nextdoor.com site, you may find job opportunities right in your own neighborhood. Read the News Be aware of the latest business news in the community youre interested in. American City Business Journals contains information on business in a variety of cities. Each journal is updated weekly and should be required reading for anyone interested in the pulse of the local business community including new businesses, expansions, and cut-backs. This will help you know which employers to target in your search. You don’t want to apply for a job at an organization that’s going to have layoffs in six months. Find Companies Use the Verizon Yellow Pages to search for local companies by keyword and/or location. You may find potential employers that you didnt know about. Then visit the companys website to review job openings and career information. Follow Employers on Social Media When we talk about social media in the context of job searching, it’s usually to discuss the things you shouldn’t do, if you want to get hired. But, social media isn’t just a negative factor in your job search: with a little careful curation, you can use it to help you get the attention of a hiring manager at your favorite local company. Start by following your local employers on the social networks you already use, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Look for job postings, but don’t stop there: cultivate a connection with the company by participating in conversations with them, using the appropriate hashtags. Network, Network, Network Finally, dont forget to network. It really does work! Up to 80 percent of all jobs are found by networking. Some of the best job opportunities never make it to job boards or corporate sites. To get to these secret listings, you need a friend on the inside. Fortunately, it’s easier than ever to cultivate those relationships, thanks to those aforementioned social networks. LinkedIn, in particular, can be a great way to forge connections to local jobs. But, don’t overlook your real-life connections, either: your former colleague, boss, roommate, etc., might know about a job opportunity at their company that would be perfect for you. Keep in touch online, plan regular coffee dates to renew the relationship, and be on the lookout for opportunities to help them, as well. That way, they’ll think of you first when jobs open up.

If it takes just a single page, then that's much better than artificially hoping to stuff this up with non-relevant specifics. A two page resume isn't simple to read! The last page of the document ought to be at least half-full.
